In 1994, the Beat Generation writer William S. Burroughs of Interzone and Naked Lunch fame, a close friend of Brion Gysin (who had brought Rolling Stone's founder Brian Jones to Jajouka in 1968), wrote an significant letter to Cherie Nutting, stating that he regarded Bachir Attar to be the only rightful inheritor of the mantle of Leader of the 'master musicians' and that in his opinion, there is only one legitimate Master Musicians of Jajouka group from Jajouka, Morocco (not Mohamed Hamri's Joujouka band). The expriate writer and composer Paul Bowles first introduced William Buroughs to Brion Gysin in 1954. |
